Wanska: The Art of Decolonization fosters understanding between our peoples!

Sage and smudge bolw

About Us

Wanska: the Art of Decolonization is a talking circle open to all, natives and non-natives who wish to foster a healthy relationship between the first peoples and the descendants of the settlers. This talking circle is based upon traditional Cree culture of sharing in a circle where everyone is equal. Wanska is a Cree word for "arise with the sun" or awake your spirit. To awake our spirits, a smudge ceremony is part of the talking circle. This will help bring our spirits together as one.

We are all in this together – and we are glad you are visiting our site.

Our Work

The talking circle is to share feelings, ideas on colonization, and decolonization in a safe environment. We work together to decolonize each other, create and foster functional relationships between our peoples . Whether you’re ready to only listen, share your feelings our stories, here’s the place to do it. We meet once a month in Greater Victoria, come back soon for dates, location and time!

Join Us

Whether you are of  First Peoples descent or a descendent of the settlers or new to our cause, we invite you to join us. We welcome new ideas and value enthusiasm from our allies and fellow Victorians, new and old.

The Wanska group is located on land that is the traditional territory of the Lekwungen, Esquimalt, and Saanich peoples. We acknowledge their welcome to all our peoples who seek community building and understanding here.
